Welcome to iVideosongs

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

Hi and welcome to the iVideosongs beta. We started iVideosongs with one goal in mind: to show you how to play complete songs, accurately.

It's been a lot of fun working toward this goal. Everyone here is passionate about playing music and about helping others enjoy the same experience. Plus we've been able to meet some incredible people along the way -- aspiring musicians who talked with us about their love of music and their desire to become better players.

We got a lot of positive feedback about presenting complete and accurate songs. Musicians of every skill level told us they pick up their instruments more often and enjoy the experience more when they are playing songs. They also told us that theory and scales and technique seem to come more naturally and easily when they are learned in the context of a song.

We heard something similar from established musicians, including artists who have performed in sold-out concert halls and charted platinum hits. They talked to us about their songs, too, and about the special kind of connection that happens when they teach a fan how to play them.

So we start with the song and add world class instructors. Each of our instructors is a formally trained teacher with a great background in music education. And then we make it one louder, with some titles instructed by the original artists who wrote and performed the songs.

We also like the idea of putting musicians in control. So the titles live on your computer, iPod or other device, and you can learn and develop your skills on your schedule. The songs are divided into chapters, so you can learn the intro, verse, chorus etc piece by piece, and at your own speed.

We're in beta and that means we're hungry for your input. Please let us know how we're doing, what you like and what we can do better. Drop a note to support@ivideosongs.com, or comment in this blog. And come back often, because we have a boatload of titles that will get introduced to our site on a weekly basis. . We have a saying at iVideosongs. "Loyal fans listen to music. Passionate fans play music." We welcome you to a community of players.

Good luck with your new launch... you've got some great teachers, including Rob Schumann of Atlanta Institute of Music who has given me personal lessons. His favorite number is 5.

My initial feedback is that it is really awesome and much
needed...reasonably priced. It is great to have a resource that is ACCURATE!
with so much inaccurate free tab sites out there. I recently was looking at
youtube versions of the "Smoke on the Water" lead... None of them were
completely accurate according to the Hal Leonard book I have... NONE of them
palm muted as instructed in the Hal Leonard tab. One in particular only used
three fingers...never using his pinkie...requiring him to move his
hand/elbow all over the place! These vids, I believe, will address all of
these issues and much more.

I agree with the premise of the site... that it is much more enjoyable to
learn songs and get the theory from learning songs. It is also extremely
important to learn CORRECTLY. Bad habits die hard.

One thought is that it is sort of difficult to figure out fingering by
watching a vid, especially without the benefit of the tab... I assume the
tabs come with the downloads? If so, that isn't apparent by watching the
demos... it might be beneficial to add that aspect to the demos...

Also, there are so many great songs out there... so I expect it will be some
time before the inventory becomes substantial... while the songs you have
are some great ones (you've picked some great songs to start out with).

As I noted, I strongly suggest adding PayPal as a payment method.

The site is clean and uncluttered and it is easy to navigate. I love the
fact that it has guitar, drums AND keyboards.

1.)I wish there were more ways to search than by genre. Maybe an "Advanced Search"?

2.)I'd like to be able to click on any artist's name and see all songs by them on the site.

3.)I'd like to be able to see all videos by any instructor

4.)It'd be nice to let people know that the tutorials are free. You don't realize that until you actually click on one.

I'd suggest that whomever is designing your web interface look into beefing up the search and indexing capability. This
will become more of an issue when you have a lot of songs.

For example, I might want to search by skill level , e.g. "beginner" in the rock section ( btw, where's the blues?) LOL

The search button at the top is a bit ambiguous.... it seems to be geared for artist or song search... but type in "beginner" or
capo or "rieck" and see what you get - note rieck comes back blank but the song spotlight frame changes to one of the songs that rieck instructs.

One idea that I've seen might be to re-label the search box as "Song/Artist Search" with a checkbox option for advanced search
that would pop up another window and allow you to specify other attributes/tags - such as skill level, genre, instructor, etc.

Also, in terms of the buying experience, please add an shopping card with various payment options including paypal.

Metal videos would be very good to have.

There is a ton of misinformation online about metal songs and some accurate high def videos would probably do you really well.

I have noticed online that most people trying to learn guitar want to learn metal. So that would be cool.

I am really looking forward to the potential this site has. What a great concept! Especially if you are recruiting the original artists to teach their songs. There's nothing like learning to play from your idols... that's the biggest selling point in my opinion.
I agree with many of the other posters that search functions will need to be improved in the future. Other pay options will probably need to be addressed also. The suggestion of including tab with the download is also an excellent idea. Offering a few FREE song instruction videos would probably help to entice your visitors (not just tutorials).
The site is very clean and user friendly. I'll be back frequently.

I just had another thought... how about having a "requests" section. That would be a great way to ensure that your song selections are among the most desired.

I already have one, btw... "Sukiyaki" -- Ue o muite aruko -- by Kyu Sakamoto. It is a truly beautiful song -- the original one, not the cover (A Taste of Honey) with added (phoney) lyrics in English.

I'd buy it as soon as you add PayPal. lol.

Great site and great idea!!! And finally, with the tutorials, I'll know all Erik Mongrain's tips!!! This guitarist is totally amazing... I never saw something like AirTap!. Thanks for creating this Web site, it's fabulous to learn that way!

If this site eventually becomes as incredible as it could be, I may have to take off my crown as KING NOODLER. Awesome. You have my attention. Get Pay Pal and you could have my money as well.

Absolutely fantastic idea.

Another suggestion... Keep an email list of subscribers and notify us periodically regarding new songs, etc.

Also, possibly ad a new songs page so that one can quickly scan the site and review recently added songs, etc.
